How do you decorate with comfortable lighting, when you are the world-renowned industrial designer Tord Boontje?
We had a talk with the world-renowned, Dutch designer Tord Boontje, who has previously exhibited at the world's leading museums for art and design, including MoMA in New York.
Tord Boontje has designed countless, innovative and creative products and we spoke with him on the launch of his newest creation for Foscarini: Sun Light of Love
What does light and design mean to you?
"Light is a very interesting topic to work with as a designer. With lighting, one must deal with the relationship between the object that radiates light and the effect it creates in the room."

What do you find particularly interesting about working specifically with design lighting?
"Light has a large influence on the room and how we feel in it. The emotional part of the design is what interests me the most."
Why does light quality matter to you?
"Like everyone else, during the day I prefer a pure, white light in the studio and in the evening a softer, calmer light at home. I like indirect light the most and interesting shadows at home."

When do you experience that light is most important to you, during the day?
"Especially now, during the Covid-19 shutdown, I try to go out as much as possible when the sun is out. I walk for an hour or a few hours and walk through the streets and parks of London. The sunshine lifts my spirits and I think someone said that ''creativity lives on its feet" - our dog likes it too!"
What is the typical mistake you see, when decorating with lights?
"To create a relaxed atmosphere, it is good to have the light coming from the wall rather than from the ceiling. That is the most common misconception."
