Design: Stemlite designed by Bill Curry, 1962
Concept:
The idea behind the design for Stemlite was based on a wish from Bill Curry's side, to be able to change the norms for lamp design. He wanted to create a lamp that did not consist of the, at the time, otherwise so traditional base, bulb, shade construction. Curry wanted to create a lamp that combined the three components into an organic, colorful lamp. That desire resulted in the first '' Total look '' lamp,
Stemlite.
The design draws inspiration from flowers which, with their strong but thin stems, can hold a heavy flowerhead upright. This inspiration can be seen on the metal base which mimics the stem of a tulip. Via the mouth-blown glass globe on top, Stemlite emits a soft and pleasantly diffused light.
Stemlite was Bill Curry's best-selling collection and was also used to present American design in the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Iraq in the 1960s. Stemlite has been brought back to life by GUBI, to reintroduce the world to Bill Curry's amazing work.
The Stemlite collection is available as a table lamp, floor lamp, or pendant. All are available in gray, black-red, or black chrome.
